Obituary of Joe Tanner

Joseph (Joe) Tanner Joe passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood at the age of 75. Lovingly nick named Joe Joe, he leaves behind his family Lori Sweeney and Janet and Ron Wyant. Janet and Rons children, the late David MacBurnie (Caitlin), Jonathon Haste, Brittany Wyant (Matt), Taylor Maybee (Chris), and their children Jackson and Nathaniel. And family friend Tammy Demers. Not being biologically related to someone does not make you any less “Family”. Being a real family isn’t in the DNA, it’s in the heart. Joe Joe will forever be in our hearts and will be deeply missed. At the age of 18 Joe left the HRC in Orillia and began a life of independent living. During his 25 years at the Sundial, he met an Executive Chef by the name of Tom Ball (Lori and Janets Dad). Tom and Joe became lifelong friends and although Joe was challenged with a disability he worked hard, enjoyed working, making friends, being social and built a happy life working and living in Orillia. In 2023 Joe moved closer to family and into retirement home living. Joe quickly made friends with residents and staff and he enjoyed the many activities but he quickly became the King of the Cornhole tournaments. Joe enjoyed weekends at the cottage and the Stayner Farmers Market where he could visit the miniature horses and check out some classic cars. After a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer we are devastated that Joe is gone but we know that Joe and Tom are together like old times catching up over a pitcher or two. To Joes doctor, Dr. David Beisel and his primary care nurse Allison who showed so much care and compassion for our Joe, we are eternally thankful for you and all you did to support Joe in his end of life care. A reception to celebrate Joes amazing life will be held at the Simcoe Funeral Home, 38 James Street E Orillia on Friday March 28th 2025 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. As a recent recipient of a living wish, Joe would appreciate, if desired, donations to be made to the Living Wish Foundation in Collingwood through the Simcoe Funeral Home, 38 James Street E Orillia ON (705) 327 0221.
