To Jackie, Sharon and families our sincerest condolences in the loss of your beautiful mom, grandma and great grandma. I have such fond memories of Pat while visiting at her home during my teen years as Jackie’s friend. Jackie and I’s friendship has been maintained over distance and time and I still have fond memories of her mom, Pat - she was always so kind and generous. She also always welcomed me for dinners and she made the best roast beef dinners and Yorkshire puddings! Thinking of you at this difficult time Jackie, Sharon and your families! I know that she will be missed! Sincerely, Carolann and Paul Thompson

Thank you so much Carolann and Paul. So many years ago now - she’d pick you up to come to Terra Cotta and your Dad would pick you up. She was so good like that. And yes she made the best Yorkshires. I still to this day follow her recipe and we never have roast beef without Yorkshires. Mom so much appreciated receiving your yearly Christmas update and I thank you for putting a smile on her face with that.

Mom’s Life
By Sharon & Jackie
Patricia Mary Barsby was born to Dorthy Chapman Barsby and Charles Barsby on July 9, 1927, in Ilford, Twickenham in the UK.
Pat was adored by her two older brothers Bob & George and 10 years later her sister, Janet was born.
She lived through the war and with the London bombings schools were cancelled and she started to work at the age of 14. With her father and brothers off to war, and her mother not coping well, Pat at a young age became caregiver of her baby sister. This bond lasted a lifetime.
July 30, 1949, Pat married the love of her life, best friend and partner for 69 years, Ronald Herbert March. Together they built an amazing life.
They arrived, by ship, in Canada on August 17, 1952, where they settled into a basement apartment. Pat found a job at Inglis and most of the money they brought with them went to put Ron through welding school. They lived frugally on Pat’s wages. A new start and a career that would last a lifetime as a Tool & Die Welder. Pat proudly told people she worked with Ron, for 28 years, doing the book work and travelling with him to Scarborough to be by his side.
They travelled north to spend their free time exploring the open spaces, fishing in the untouched lakes, camping and quickly learning about Canadian winters an experiencing, for the first time, snow, skiing and ice-covered lakes. Loving their new country they became Canadian Citizens.
They scrimped and saved and bought their first home in Scarborough, and not long after, they became parents to Jackie and two years later Sharon. They built a cottage on Healy Lake which she loved. Both girls went across the lake in carriages as it was boat access only. When the drive up north became too much, they sold the cottage, bought land and built their dream home in Terra Cotta. Pat, now a country girl, cut 5 acres of grass on the riding mower. She learned to drive the tractor, with Sharon and Jackie in a wagon behind it, picking up rocks from the fields as they went along.
She proudly says she mixed an unbelievable amount of cement for the dam, when they built a pond. Pat was a real trooper, even when she may not have always agreed with Ron’s schemes.
We remember Mom for always being there for her girls. Driving us in and out of Georgetown to pick up friends to spend the day with us. Fond memories of taking us to the big new mall in Brampton and we always were treated to lunch at Big Boys. We had a dog named Lady and Mom loved her so much and then there was the injured pheasant that she adopted that would come and visit. There was always an abundance of love for all things.
Later they moved once again, as retirement approached, to their home in Bayshore Village on the shores of Lake Simcoe. Mom loved being by the water, sitting in the sunroom holding hands with Dad, watching the birds, admiring her Hubbie’s beautiful flowers. They had an active social life. Cards with friends every week, the Tea & Chat group whom she became very close with; life was never dull.
With a van loaded to the brim, they headed to their home in Holiday, Florida every year for over 30 years! Dad fished and golfed and Mom joined the lady’s group and enjoyed the warm weather and being away from the snow.
When Dad’s health deteriorated and he went into care at Champlain Manor in 2018, she devoted herself to being there every day to see him and making sure he had the best of care. Knowing the winter driving would be too much at 91, she moved into Champlain for only the winter, where she quickly decided that she was staying. This became her home, and she became very fond of a number of her caregivers.
Mom will always be remembered for her big heart and kindness she showed many. She made over 60 Afghans that were all given away to friends, family or someone in need. She was a wonderful friend to many over the years with her generous nature and always willing to help out.
Mom loved family, we were her world and later were our husbands too. She often said she loved Al & Ron like her own. Grandsons- Kurtis, Andrew and Matthew came along and they were her pride and joy. Pictures filled her room at Champlain. Kurtis’ love, Elisha, was the granddaughter she never had, and in the last few years she became a Great-Grammie to two beautiful granddaughters - Kyla and Emmie. We both talked to her every single night, and she loved hearing about all the family antics and took an interest in all we did.
We will miss so much about our Mom but have so many wonderful memories that we will hold close to our hearts.
