Obituary of Stanley Metcalf
Metcalf, Stanley L.M.,
1926–2025
Born in Bancroft, raised in Tweed, and proudly adopted by Sault Ste. Marie (even if he never quite shook the small-town charm), Stanley Metcalf lived a life rich in service, caffeine, and handwritten correspondence.
Stan was the beloved husband of Margaret (predeceased) for 67 years and father of Sandra (Dave), Nancy (Jim), Kevin (Loriann), Curtis (Valerie) and Craig (Julie). Stan is also survived by his sister Muriel. Loving grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of eight. Stan would have wanted to give a special shout out to his granddaughter Vangi Ball – his faithful chauffeur, scheduling secretary and loving caretaker.
After moving to Orillia in 1969, Stan worked at the Huronia Regional Centre for over two decades, rising to Supervisor through grit, determination, and perhaps a little divine assistance—especially considering his minimal formal education and complete disregard for modern HR jargon.
His heart belonged to the Salvation Army, serving faithfully across the Soo, Newmarket, and Orillia, where he held the title of Corps Sergeant Major for 36 years—a role he performed with humility, leadership, and just the right amount of holy stubbornness.
Speaking of stubbornness, Stanley was a die-hard Maple Leafs fan. Yes, one of the brave few who actually remembers the last time they won the Stanley Cup. This miracle of memory made him both a historian and a long-suffering optimist.
Stan was also a regular at Tim Hortons—not so much for the donuts (which frequently battled his blood sugar) but for the camaraderie. He once moved house because the nearest Tim’s was a tragic ten miles away. His priorities were clear.
A passionate supporter of global ministries, the local Salvation Army, animal shelters, and health charities, Stan believed in giving—though his go-to tip calculation of 9% may have left waitstaff both puzzled and slightly underwhelmed.
In an age of emojis and unread emails, Stan kept the lost art of letter-writing alive, often crafting 30 heartfelt notes a month by hand. If you ever received one, you likely remember it—possibly with a smile, possibly with a puzzled look at his handwriting.
Above all, Stanley was a man of deep Christian faith. The Bible was his compass, his comfort, and his constant reminder to treat others with compassion, respect, and grace—even if they rooted for the Canadiens.
Stanley leaves behind a legacy of quiet wisdom, generous spirit, and unwavering faith. To all who knew him, he was a rock—a slightly coffee-stained, well-lettered, faith-fueled rock. The family wishes to thank Tina Flemming for her round the clock, devoted care of Stan during his final months.
A celebration of life will take place at the Orillia Citadel of the Salvation Army on Sunday June 1st, 2025 at 12:30 p.m., following the morning service.
As he ended every letter, so shall we: Walk With God.
