Obituary of Peter McEwen
McEwen, Peter
October 11th, 1940 ~ June 11th , 2025
After nearly 85 years of adventuring, creating, experiencing, learning, sharing, and generally participating in life to the fullest, our beloved Papa Peter died peacefully at home on June 11, 2025. He is survived by his wife Joanna and their three children, Sara (John), Ian (Erin) and Joel (Angie). Peter also leaves behind his brother and sister, John McEwen and Elizabeth Eadie, and some of his absolutely favourite people - grandchildren Fiona, Samantha, Kelton, Thomas and Lila. He was also loved by many cherished nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Peter was born in East York (Toronto) and played hockey and football as a proud East York Goliath. He attended Queen’s University, where he played varsity rugby and hockey. It was there he met Joanna Andersen. They married and moved to Simcoe County where he taught high school in Barrie and Orillia, and coached various sports including cross-country running and skiing. He and Joanna bought property in Oro-Medonte near Rugby, raised their family, and combined talents to run Stoneybroke Pottery. Peter’s creative endeavours were expansive: painting, photography, poetry, prose, and story-telling. Many of his artistic inspirations came from being a devoted outdoorsman, happiest tromping through the bush, paddling around Wall Island on Georgian Bay at the crack of dawn, breaking trail on cross-country skis, or sitting on his deck at Sugarbush watching the antics of the birds warring at his feeders. Most of the time he had a dog or two or three at his side. Peter is dearly missed by those who knew him and we might all aspire to achieve even a modicum the zen disposition, curiosity, and wonder with which he approached life. The family is collecting their fondest memories to be shared at a later date. Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.simcoefuneralhome.ca
