Obituary of Ritchie Udell

Udell, Ritchie Ritchie Udell, 70, of Orillia, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on October 6, 1955, Ritchie is cherished husband to Cheryl Udell, and loving father to Mark Udell. He was the beloved son of (predeceased) Charles and Dorothy Udell, a cherished brother to (predeceased) Jerry Udell (Brenda), and a proud uncle to his beautiful nieces Krista, Alison, and Whitney. Cherished Brother in law to Kerri Wigle (Rob) and Rick Wigle. Through every season of life, Ritchie carried both stubbornness and laughter—and even in his final days, his smile and sense of humour still shone through. Ritchie was a loyal friend to Ken Micks, Bob Udell, and many others too numerous to mention, each friendship holding a special place in his heart. He loved reminiscing about the many shenanigans he shared with his friends, baseball teammates, and coworkers. Ritchie will be remembered for his humour, resilience, and the wholehearted way he loved the people in his life. He found joy in simple pleasures—time with family, the freedom and independence of the open road, and the quiet comfort of being with those he loved most. He dedicated 35 years to Orillia Water Light and Power, beginning his career as a lineman and working his way up to retire in 2010 as Distribution Superintendent. He took pride in his work and in serving his community. His love story with Cheryl was anything but ordinary. Married, divorced, and reunited, their bond proved that true love can bend, break, and return stronger than ever. “Our love is not measured by years or by others. It is raw, real, sacred, and exactly as it was meant to be—ours.” On behalf of Ritchie, Mark, and myself, heartfelt thanks are extended to all who walked beside us during this journey, offering care, guidance, and compassion. Special thanks to Nurse Practitioner Joanne Matte, Nurse Jessica, his neurologist Dr. Bonares and the team at Sunnybrook Hospital, his family physician Dr. Perrigo, Dr. Alex Jahangirand - neurologist Barrie, Erin Carpenter of Ontario at Home, Connor at ProResp, Dr. Tony Reid, PSW Kristine, and the many dedicated doctors and nurses at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital and ALS Canada. Your kindness made an immeasurable difference to Ritchie and to those who loved him and we will never forget it. At Ritchie’s request, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life with family and friends will be held at a later date to honour his life. In his honour, may we remember Ritchie for the man he was—not his disease—and be reminded to love fully, laugh often, and never take a single breath for granted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALS Canada or to the Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital through the Simcoe Funeral Home, 38 James Street E Orillia (705) 327-0221.
