Obituary of Margaret Knifton

Knifton: Margaret (Marg) Irene July 17, 1920 Toronto -July 17, 2012 Kilworthy Passed away on her 92'nd birthday, 136 days after the death of her beloved husband of 74 years, Gord "Knifty" Knifton. Loving mother of the late Connie, Bob and his wife Carol, and Ron. Grandmother of Terry, David (predeceased), Tim, James, Billy and Melinda, plus numerous great-grandchildren. Daughter of the late Tom and Annie. Predeceased by brother's Fred, Tom and Jack. Survived by sister's Dorothy and Grace. Marg was a truly unique woman - gentle, loving and giving. She devoted her life to her family, always putting other people's needs before her own. Underneath the placid exterior, however, she was tough as nails and had a will of iron. Marg was married at 17 and struggled with Knifty through hard times in the depression raising two children with very limited resources. During WWII, with Knifty in the army, Marg was forced to use all of her cunning and wiles to keep the kids fed and warm. (There is a rumour that the reason there were no fence-boards left in the neighborhood was that some person was ripping them down to keep her furnace going). In 1983 Marg and Knifty retired to the family homestead in Kilworthy and enjoyed many happy years feeding birds, planting flowers, trees (and failing miserably at vegetables). They loved spending time with the whole extended family of brothers, sisters, in-laws and outlaws, enjoying an "occasional" glass of homemade wine. Marg was an avid knitter and could produce a sweater in a couple of hours at the same time as she was watching TV or talking on the phone. She truly loved kids and dogs (not necessarily in that order). Rufus is going to miss her terribly. Special thanks to the Red Cross PSW workers, the VON nurses and Dr. Mike Francis who cared so wonderfully for Marg and allowed her to stay at home right until the end (just like Knifty). Cremation has taken place. A Family "Get Together" is planned to remember Marg, which will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the Bracebridge OSPCA would be appreciated by the family.
