When I started teaching at GHS in September 1981, John was one of the first teachers I got to know well. We, and a few other teachers, shared the second floor work room during our spares where much conversation, and often hilarity, ensued. When I was expecting for the first time, John collected money from the staff and bought me a beautiful high chair for the baby, which has now been used by two grandsons too. All three of my children, Laura, Michael and Kathleen, thought John was the best math teacher ever. We are thankful to have such good memories of time spent in John's company. They, and my husband Paul, join me in sending sympathy and loving thoughts to Margie and all members of the Sharples and Cats families.

I am so sorry to learn of John’s passing and my deepest condolences to his family and friends at this time of loss.
I know John only from his visits to the YMCA and truly enjoyed our brief chats when he would arrive and again on his way out.
He seemed to be very nice and kind as well as patient and understanding. Unfortunately due to closure of the Y in March, I hadn’t seen John for many months so I was very shocked to hear that he is gone far too soon.
I appreciated learning more about John and his life and his family while reading the tributes and memories posted and how many lives he touched and the positive impact he had
I hope your memories of John and love shared and a life well-lived bring you comfort.

On behalf of the Retired Teachers of Ontario, I would like to offer condolences to John’s family. Too young, too soon.
I will be sending a donation to Parkinson’s on behalf of The Retired Teachers Muskoka Group #46 of which John was a member.
I have many personal memories of working with John in the old “Muskoka Board of Education”. He obviously enjoyed working with young people. He was always kind and open to new ideas.

First met John when he was teaching in Mount Forest. He was going out with Bernadette and I was going out with her brother Frank. Frank and I married Bern and John married and moved to Gravenhurst. This started the treks between Mount Forest and Gravenhurst. Lindsay came along, then our Amy, next came Eric, and then our Joe, we all agreed that these four were best friends as well as best cousins. Along came beautiful Lori (we stopped). Whatever was going on in Gravenhurst, we were there from Snow Carnival dances to summer holidays. Over the years we still kept in touch. Memories yes there are many of dear John. Our condolences to Margie and her extended family. Our prayers are with you dear Bernadette, Lindsay, Eric, Lori and all the beautiful grandchildren. love Deb and Frank

Dear Lindsey, Alan, Eric, Dianne, Lori, Tyler, Bernadette, Margie and families,
So very sorry to hear of the sudden loss of John (Mr. Cats to all of his GHS students). I remember him as a cool, surfer looking dude who all of girls thought was a refreshing addition to the GHS faculty at the time. The blonde curly hair and corduroy pants brought a new reason to attend math class.
It was even cooler that Bernadette babysat my brother after school at the time. Over the years our Mum would keep us up to date on the happenings at GHS and I remember her telling us the he had retired! No, I thought, he’s too young to retire. I was pleased to hear he continued to live life on his own terms and was able to travel with his new partner. It’s so cool that our families have been reconnected and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you knowing that he passed on his own terms as well being at home.

Please accept my condolences. Mr. Cats was one of the best teacher's I have ever studied under. Very smart man and had an easy way about him that made you feel comfortable in asking questions. I had him for Advanced Math in 1984/1985 and still remember him staring at a pencil while he rolled it during our tests...deep in thought. He inspired me and I am sure countless others. May he rest in peace.
