We were so sad to hear of the passing of John. Our whole family enjoyed his company, his humour and kindness. He always made us feel so welcome. We will always remember when the McFarlane family welcomed us into their home for a wonderful ski weekend...everyone was so kind to us and John and Karen played a huge part in making us all feel special. Our visits with John on Rankin Lake will never be forgotten. He will be missed. We offer our condolences to Karen, and the whole family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. The Jobin Family xo

I was greatly saddened to hear the news about John . I had the great pleasure of working with him in Toronto many years ago . He was something of a mentor to me and to others . He had enormous dedication to the work , which was an inspiration, but he also had a gimlet eye for the ironies and absurdities that sometimes flowed from it .
He was compassionate, clever and funny , and he could be a source of strength. He made work fun, and when it was not fun , he made it tolerable .
His was a brilliant spirit, and my heart goes out to his loved ones

Johnny grew up as part of an extended family in the Kilkenny neighborhood which also included the Bodens who were 2 doors up from the McFarlane residence. While I had 2 brothers of my own, I had 2 more brothers and a sister living 2 houses away. Johnny always had time for a game of road hockey and to this day there is an old stick in the box of my truck, just in case Johnny called and needed one more body for a game. In the mid 1970's there was a concert in Toronto with a new rocker and I couldn't get a date...Johnny was my "plus one" and off we went to hear and see the "new guy",Bruce Springsteen. It was a great night. When the McFarlanes got a boat, they came camping to Bon Echo and so we spent our summer vacations water skiing and swimming. 3 at a time behind the boat but try as we might, we could never master the skill of building a pyramid on skis. Those days were filled with laughter and good times. The time spent in those early years will always be remembered with great fondness and love. Although we had drifted apart, when I saw him for the first time in almost 40 years, our smiles could have lit up any room. Johnny, get in shape bud, because those road hockey games will be played again...

I was saddened to hear the news of the passing of Johnny. I have some very fond memories of growing up down the street from the McFarlane’s. On several occasions the family would go camping at Bon Echo which was on the same lake as ours and bring up their boat. That was always a highlight for our family. I remember one summer Johnny decided it was time to teach me to how trick ski. I will never forget the patience and the determination he showed. Johnny’s infectious laugh, full of life presence and a genuine love of people will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace my friend you will be truly missed.

I am saddened to learn of this heartbreaking news. John was my roommate at the University of Ottawa. We had lost touch over the years but I have fond memories of our times together.
This picture does him justice. How I recall him banging out his thesis on an old type writer only to be interrupted by reheating tea in a pot, firing up a smoke and reflecting on the latest Kurt Vonnegut book. Who could forget that laugh and his trusty Bug. I could go own and on. He was a good guy and I am not surprised that he and Karen enjoyed a full life with kids and careers.
My thoughts are with his entire family.

Karen, there are no words. John was a good friend and colleague to me and I will miss that wonderful sense of humour. John was always there to give you advice or a hug, whatever he thought you needed more of. He had a unique way of looking at the world and was like a breath of fresh air. I looked forward to our chats about the kids, who were always his focus. A unique guy and the world is a better place for having him in it. Take care and sending virtual hugs. Always generous of spirit, Johnny never failed to be a warm, welcoming and kind friend. He was a brilliant story-teller. Many of our favourite memories revolve around the wonderful, funny stories he would share, always finding the irony in a situation and adding his own flourish in the telling (we called it “Johnny-izing”), making everyone around him laugh. Our heartfelt condolences to Karen, Jamie, Emily, and Will and to all of the McFarlane family – we are truly sorry for your loss.
