Obituary of John James Curran
CURRAN, John (Jack) James - Passed away at Soldiers Memorial Hospital on February 16, 2023, at the age of 86. Loving father of Chris (predeceased) father-in-law to Erin. Proud grandfather of Josh, Jenna, Jager, Jade and Jett (predeceased). Eldest brother of Joan, Tom, Ken and Alan. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his family and many friends.
Born and raised in Orillia, Jack was an avid sportsman. He played hockey, lacrosse and fastball throughout his youth and excelled in all three sports. Later he was a member of the Coldwater Creaks Oldtimers’ hockey team that competed internationally. He was also well known in the harness racing community. He owned and trained many Standardbred horses and was very successful on the Ontario circuit.
Jack was first employed as a linotype operator for the family-owned Orillia Newsletter. He later worked for local papers in both Gravenhurst and Beaverton. When technology replaced the linotype, Jack started a contracting business that included siding, roofing and construction.
Jack will be remembered as a brave individual, never afraid to take a risk or stand up for a friend. He will also be remembered for his work ethic, keeping busy with construction projects and wood cutting well into his eighties.
Remember a simple act of kindness can make a difference and we ask in memory of John to pay it forward.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday April 16, 2023, from 1:00-4:00 at Couchiching Golf & Country Club. Messages of condolence are welcomed through the Simcoe Funeral Home 38 James Street E. Orillia (705) 327-0221.
