Obituary of Barbara Joan Godfrey-Herel

“A thing of beauty and a joy forever” Godfrey-Herel, Barbara Joan It is with sadness and grace that we share the news that Barbara Joan Godfrey-Herel, 86 years old- less 2 days, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the home of her granddaughter, Laura and her partner Dave, on October 6th 2023. She died as she lived – with humour, tremendous love for family, steadfast in her faith and as stubborn as they come! We are so grateful that those who adored her, learned from her, and were shaped by her were surrounding and caring for her, in person or virtually to the end. Barbara leaves behind a cherished brother Terry and wife Diane; unconditionally loved children Pamela (John), Rick (Sharon), Maggie, Mana (Doug) and Herb – and her lap companion, Zeus. Her 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren (too many to name!) brought her immense joy and kept her going when her kidneys had other plans for her. A strong and fiercely independent woman, Barbara wore many hats. Sister, mother, grandmother – great grandmother. Student of spirituality and lay minister, community organizer, social convenor, and (reluctant) matriarch. Over the course of her life, Barbara hosted house church, served on the board of a women's shelter, started a soup kitchen and organized annual concerts for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Barbara was a lover of books, fine art, and anything sweet to eat. The family is incredibly grateful for the outstanding care provided by Bayshore Nursing and for the nurses at the 5th floor of the Ottawa Civic hospital, particularly Meaghan – who really knew how to make mom smile. Special shout out to the best PSW this country has ever seen, her grand daughter and namesake Barbara Joan whose magic hands and professionalism allowed mom to keep her dignity intact. To her second granddaughter Laura for opening her home so she could end her life with her family around her. A celebration of life will take place from 1-3pm on Sunday, November 12 in the first floor common room of 75-Nine Mile rd, Beaverton, ON? Friends and family are welcome to leave remembrances at the following website. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome a donation in her name to the Stephen Lewis Foundation or other charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Simcoe Funeral Home, 38 James St E Orillia Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.simcoefuneralhome.ca Good night, God bless you, we love you.
