Deepest Sympathy to the family of Suus.
I met Suus at the French conversation classes held weekly at the library when I first moved to the Orillia area in 2019. I was immediately drawn to her; her gentle smile, her calm demeanor. I was lucky enough to get to know Suus better when a few of us from the class decided to form "notre petit groupe" that became known as Café Français. After Suus decided not to drive anymore, I would pick her and off we'd go to either the library or a coffee shop in town to practise French conversation. No matter what the topic Suus had something interesting to contribute. She always had a sparkle in her eye when she shared stories about her life; growing up in Holland, coming to Canada, working at the university, her children and grandchildren, camping, canoeing, travelling, annual trips to Parry Sound for the music festival, and many more.
Elle me manque.
À la prochaine, mon amie...

Sending my deepest sympathies to Suus's family. Suus radiated energy and enthusiasm, and I always enjoyed talking with her at the Festival of The Sound, and even more when she came to lunch once a year during the Festival for about 6 years before the pandemic.
I met Suus and Jan in about 1991, when Jan volunteered to represent Hike Ontario on an advisory committee that assisted the Ministry of Natural Resources in the development of the Seguin Trail Management Plan (in the Parry Sound area). Jan's contributions were significant, but we also enjoyed Suus, as she accompanied Jan to the regular evening meetings, and more so when she participated in weekend field visits. So I was particularly happy to see both of them every summer at the Festival of the Sound, for a quick catch-up. But it was in 2013, after my retirement from MNR, that I got to know Suus much better (sadly, at that point Jan could no longer attend the Festival of the Sound). Her energy (even in her early 90's) was inspiring - and her forthright manner and enthusiasm made her a fun person to be with.
I thought of her (as well as Jan) at the Festival performances that I attended this past summer. Thank you for sharing the lovely photograph of Suus under the umbrella - it captures perfectly my memories of Suus. Dorothy Shaver, Parry Sound

Dear Gail, Andrew, Brian and families,
My deepest condolences to everyone. It was a true pleasure to have known Suus and Jan. Suus was always thoughtful, engaging, inquisitive and loved to laugh! She really enjoyed her time in Parry Sound at the Festival of the Sound. She finally started to complain in her early 90’s that she couldn’t keep up with the 60 year olds while snowshoeing! She will be missed. Sincerely, Kathleen Michalski

I have known Suus for many years. As a Snowbunny, she was always out on her snowshoes or walking - a true outdoor enthusiast! As a member of the Probus club (where I knew Jan also), she showed her broad range of interests and knowledge! As a friend, she and my mother-in-law (Glen Speer), visited often and enjoyed each others company. As a flute player, she tried to teach me to play mine, but unfortunately, I couldn’t get it - but it was lots of fun! As a member of the French group, she inspired all of us with her ability with several languages! It was at one of our meetings that I took that picture and I am honoured that you have used in this announcement.
She really wanted to live out her life at her house and so she did!
I will remember her wonderful smile and the zest she had for life!
With sympathy,
Sandy Dougall

I only knew Suus for just over a year as we were both in what we affectionately call the Café Français. During this past summer, I would pick her up once a week and drive her over to the Leacock House gardens where we sat at a picnic table with others in the group and talked in French for an hour. She spoke four languages. On one of those days, her last birthday, we shared Bocconotti Tarts, hers with a candle, and sang happy birthday in French. I’m sure the family will find the card we all signed for her. I really liked her and our small conversations which were on things like widowhood, which we shared in common. She will always be in my heart. Au revoir mon ami.
