The Land Trust community and the Couchiching Conservancy in particular has lost a very dear friend, a staunch supporter and a formidible ally. Drawing on his broad knowledge, and equally his deep humanity, he was able to bring together folks of diverse backgrounds and opinions and achieve outcomes that moved the goals of conservation forward. He will be greatly missed.
Our deepest sympathy to Janet and all the family. May your happy memories sustain you in the times ahead.
Thinking of you and sending warm thoughts.

What can I add to the marvelous words that have already been shared? Ron was unique, wasn't he? Respected by friends, but also by those "on the other side of the fence". In contrast to the other worldly comments, my favorite memory of Ron is when he taught us the proper way to peel a banana! We were gathered for lunch at the cabin and a quiet descended on the group as Ron peeled his banana from the wrong end! A quick explanation proved he was right: start the peel at the flower end, not the stalk! Always a learning curve when in the field with Ron!

It is said that the true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you may never sit, but what of the seed of wisdom? Wisdom, planted in the fertile beginnings of a young boy’s mind, grew and thrived, forming into a lifelong curiosity of nature’s beauty. That boy grew up, learning how to traverse natures path with the lessons he had gleaned. Reflecting over that path I see how it was shaped by Ron over the 30 years I knew him. His mentorship encouraging me to stop and see the diversity of life which exists around us, from the smallest insects to the largest birds, humbling my soft steps through the forest. Even in his final years Ron lived and breathed the stewardship of preservation; his mantra to retain and cherish our natural world for tomorrow never wavering. Though Ron has passed on, the canopy of his memory continues to watch over me, providing a place of solitude and reflection as I recall the fond memories our short time together. If we measure a life instead by the seeds they plant then his gift stands tall, for the fruit they bore opened the door to exploration and discovery, and for that gift I will be forever grateful.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Ron’s passing. Along with his many accomplishments, I will especially remember him whenever I visit Carden. Birders, botanists and enthusiasts of butterflies – odonates - and all the rest of nature will be forever in his debt for his crucial role in preserving our precious alvar. Ron and Janet were key figures in the long-running Carden Nature Festival, and were always gracious in greeting naturalists when we made our annual pilgrimage to Wylie Road.

We met Ron when the three of us were placed in the same grade 9 class at Chesley District High School in 1963. He became a good friend to both of us, given his respectful, kind personality. It was soon evident that he was an academic star. He was best man at our wedding. We enjoyed canoeing and camping trips together before we moved to Calgary many years ago. We still managed to cross paths from time to time over the years, both in Ontario and Alberta.
We recently visited Ron, Janet, Peter and Alex at their home in Washago and said a final goodbye while sharing favourite, and some funny, memories.
We are thinking of the loved ones who are mourning the loss of an accomplished, kind and thoughtful man, husband and father.
Sincere condolences from Ron and Marilyn Pitt (Stinson), Calgary.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Ron through the North Halton Field Naturalists (Georgetown), with the beginnings of the Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment (CONE), through the Federation of Ontario Naturalists (Ontario Nature), and at the start of a career at Ontario Hydro. As the saying goes, “a gentleman and a scholar”, who has quietly left a legacy for all.

Conservation in Ontario would be very different if not for the passionate influence of Ron. He was a pragmatic visionary that was a role model and mentor. Ron knew the science of conservation, but more importantly, he knew the people part of conservation better than anyone else I’ve known.
I still remember when Ron won the Latornell Leadership Award back in 2006, and as he graciously accepted the award, he made it very clear to the audience that he wasn’t done yet. I don’t think Ron’s work will ever end. Many of us will continue to build on his initiatives and legacy for generations to come.

Canada has lost one of its greatest environmental champions. We have all lost a gentle giant for natural heritage and conservation. In 1978, Ron was one of the founders of the Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment (CONE) and his vision and unrelenting commitment led to the adoption in 1985 of the Niagara Escarpment Plan, Canada’s first large-scale environmental land use plan. As CONE’s Executive Director (1980-82) and Co-Chair (1987-93), I remain forever grateful for his generous wisdom, courageous advocacy, emotional support and inspiring leadership. Ron was indeed a Man for All Seasons and he now joins Lyn McMillan and Mac Kirk – our indisputable Escarpment heroes who fought against punishing odds to protect our ecological corridors and natural habitats. Nature and our fellow Ontarians, and indeed all Canadians, continue to benefit from and live Ron’s invaluable environmental legacy each and every day.
We are deeply indebted to you, Janet, for making this all possible. Thank you so much. We are thinking of you and sending warmest regards and best wishes to your family and friends.

My husband ,the late ,Philip Jackman and I met Ron and Janet at Functional Fitness. Both of the gentlemen were dealing with the same illness and having to have oxygen and attempting to keep active in winter and enjoy all of the remining minutes . Philip particulary enjoyed Ron. It turns out one of our favourite local hikes was donated by Ron Reid and Family .
When Philip died Ron and Janet sent condolences which were very much appreciated.
Sincerest sympathies to his family and friends

Ron was a stellar conservationist with whom I was fortunate to work off and on over the years. He was pivotal in the founding of the Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment in 1978 and went on to serve several terms as a Commissioner on the Niagara Escarpment Commission. When I worked at the Federation of Ontario Naturalists / Ontario Nature, there was a one-year period of turmoil when Ron came in help out. He was my supervisor then in the conservation science group and I felt so fortunate to cross paths and work with him again. Ron was a kind and gentle soul at the same time as being someone of strong conservation / environmental convictions. My deepest sympathies to you, Janet, and your whole family. - Linda Pim

It was a pleasure and an honour to have known and worked with Ron during the preparation and implementation of the Niagara Escarpment Plan. I think I still have (buried in my many boxes of books) the book, "Islands of Green", which he co-wrote with Mac Kirk. A great environmental warrior! Cecil Louis
