Dear Tony, Mark, Jim and family, I was so saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. As neighbours for all my childhood, your Mom and Dad were such a big part of my life. She will be in my heart always and I will remember her for ever with love. I hope Connie and Jack are having a great time with Mike and Gloria as always. Love Diane

Jane and I are in Cozumel, Mexico and just hooked up to wi fi at Starbucks and wanted to send you these thoughts from us towards you and Mark, Jimmy and all of your extended family. > > As one chapter closes (that being that we no longer have our parents), it should not stop us from continuing new chapters on our journey of life. This is so very sad to me. What a beautiful photo of your Mom. She was so good to us as teenagers growing up and seemed so tolerant of us. Just the way I remember her and the way I will always think of her. We are struggling with my Mom right now too and hope she goes in the same peaceful way. My heart goes out to you. Steve

I am one of the "the boys" I give my condolences to the Baker family. I met Con in my teens and spent many good times in the "Pine Room " and on Moon's Bay. More important than those locations were the people in those locations . Connie always showed an interest in me and all "the Boys" and made feel important .I remember buying my first business suit to start my first job in sales and this new suit felt quite uncomfortable. One of my first stops was to the Bakers. Connie gushed over this "green sales guy" and made me feel like the most successful sale man in Etobicoke! I know all the "Boys " have their own fond Connie memories. I spoke to Connie on her 90th birthday and nothing had changed . Con still showed an interest in me and those close to me and made me feel important . Con we will miss you. See you later Weeb

Hi Bakers: > > Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year and all the best for 2014. > > And yet, sadly our most heartfelt condolences to the entire Baker clan for your loss. Please accept our sympathies from the entire Buckingham family. > > Hope that you are all doing well, and Matt, I'll be looking you up someday when I arrive on the west coast. > > I'm sure it has been a tough holiday season for all of you. > > While I only had a few chances to meet her, I thought I'd share some info from the last time that I saw Tony's mom. It was a few summers ago, around the time that I'd tried to get Baker onto the kite bug...You ever get that trainer going, Tony!? > > As dedicated (and on that day, desperate) sailors, my buddy Mike and I had toured most of Cook's Bay (Keswick), Kempenfelt Bay (Barrie), and were heading north to Orillia, for a place to launch for some time on the water. Mike was windsurfing, I was kiting. We had been driving all over southern Ontario for hours, and we were running out of ideas. > > The wind was up, wind was down, direction was shifty...we had the day off (or we had taken the day off), and we were determined to get on the water that day, we just needed a place to set up! > > After passing a familiar road, I remembered Tony telling me so many times, "c'mon up man, use the water if you're in the area, any time.!" Always tempting with the private park right next door, but we never wanted to be a bother. > > Reluctantly, we were out of options (aside from going home dry with no water time). We cruised down one of the Oro Medonte Roads, and arrived at the Baker's. > > Completely uninvited, totally unannounced, looking like a few surf bums, and with a truck full of gear, we reluctantly knocked on the door. I should add at this point that my buddy Mike ( who is a teddy bear in my eyes - known him since I was four) could easily be mistaken for a tow truck driver or a hell's angel biker. Big guy, tattoos, not someone that should be knocking on a door of a random cottage. > > Tony, your Mom didn't care about our random visit, or our loud truck or the fact that we were just a couple of sailors looking for water access. Having only met me a few times, she welcomed us to her home like we were long lost relatives. Looking back, I can only imagine that we must have given her quite a scare! She was so welcoming and seemed happy to see us. > > Seeing a few sailors looking to get in the water, she welcomed us to the lake, ( any friends of Tony and Caroline are always welcome) and didn't hesitate to offer up her home, her shower, her beer, (all off which we politely declined), all in the name of helping out some random friends of the Bakers, and all to help to grab a few hours on the water. > > We went out, we struggled, but we caught a few good rides and enjoyed the warm shallow waters of Simcoe, with a private grassy launch for our kites and our windsurfers, and with Tony's Mom and brother watching to keep an eye on us. We packed up and stayed on the grassy front, not wanting to be an intrusion. Your Mom thought we were crazy for not wanting a hot shower after! > > While we thanked her sincerely for allowing us to access her private waterfront, she honestly thought nothing of it. It is a true testament to the Baker clan...the same way that all of you Bakers welcomed Chuck and I onto the Pearl over the years. > > She was sleeping when we left, yet your brother kept a safety water watch out for us. Always nice to have some eyes on the water. > > I can't think of any cottages where I could show up uninvited and yet to be welcomed like family. > > Again sorry for your loss. > > Let's connect before I leave in the next few months... > > Darin. > > > > Darin Buckingham > 416 471-7285

In the winter of 2006, Connie's Tony called to ask if we wanted a cat. Connie's cat had dropped a litter... We had two and thought... what's one more?! We drove north to the house on the shores of Lake Simcoe. It was December. It was cold. And the snow abundant. After a wee visit with Connie and Jim, we picked our cat: a tiny white female (Connie said) with grey markings of a cap, four symmetrical dots and a tail. I remember that Connie was so concerned about this young feline, no doubt an indication of a tender heart. She wanted to find nothing but a good home for them all. We bundled up our little girl and off we went. For the first little while we called this kitten FPD (Four Polka Dots) for lack of something better. Then one day "Pearl" seemed a fitting name. We took Pearl to her first check up. Upon examining our little feline, the vet looked up and announced that Pearl had oysters! We have the very witty receptionist to thank for Connie's cat's name. As I was paying the bill, Lindsay chuckled and said: "Now, you'll have to drop the "P". And that is how Pearl became Earl.
For many years after, Connie would call us in December to ask about Earl. What he liked to eat, what his personality was like, etc.
As I write this, Earl the cat is sitting in the sun on a chair next to mine, oblivious to all these precious details of his past. Well I say so long Connie. And as my Jim often says about the elders who cross his path: "It was a pleasure to have made your acquaintance". Jim MacDonald + Caroline Lafleur
