A trip to Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Audrey's house...... as a kid it started with my mom saying "Jackie, get your coat and boots on. We're going to Uncle Lawrence's. I don't want you guys running around like a bunch of wild indians" (politically incorrect now, I know). I could usually hold it together for...maybe 2 minutes. I loved it at their house. We played with reckless abandon... in the living room, the barn, or playing hockey on the pond. Every now and then, mom would come in to settle us down a bit, then Aunt Audrey would yell at us, "don't make me go in there and have to give you guys a smack". To set the record straight on this, Aunt Audrey must have made this threat to me a hundred times over the years, the last time not that long ago, but she never did, always saying it with a smirk. As for uncle Lawrence, he always just seemed to sit back with a great big grin, enjoying the commotion coming from us kids and our mothers.
As a young adult the place to go continued to be Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Audrey's house. When I moved back to Toronto at 20, I never felt that mom and dad were far because Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Audrey seemed very willing take on that role. Sunday was a trip to their house, or to the rink where Neil and I played rec hockey. It was as a young adult when I really started to take more notice of uncle Lawrence. It was obvious how much he loved his family and having everyone around. He still had that grin on, enjoying the commotion, now coming from our kids and a new set of mother's.
Uncle Lawrence was quick to help someone whenever needed. At times he would put himself out, going above and beyond what someone would expect. When I moved to Toronto many of my belongs were stored at Uncle Albains. Soon I found an apartment. Uncle Lawrence had a truck large enough to take it all in one load. He and I set the day and time we were going to make this move. The day came and he gave me a call saying he was held up at work, but insisted he would do this job tonight. He ended up working to about midnight, then drove across the city to Scarborough to pick up my belongings... then drove back across the city to the new apartment. By the time we finished it was almost time for uncle Lawrence to go to work, so he didn't go home to sleep but went directly back to work....
I'm now about the same age as uncle Lawrence was at that time. I don't know how he did it. I know I couldn't ....
I think what I remember most of Uncle Lawrence was his smile.... whether it was while around family, at the hockey games, or in his garden....
He seemed happy, satisfied, and content. I hope others will share their stories. Rest in peace uncle Lawrence. You were very good to me, making me feel like a member of your own family. I'll never forget you.
Love Jack(ie)
