It has been just over a year and thinking about Simon still hurts my heart. I am forever appreciative for the honor of having him as an academic teacher for more than one year, a role model for more than one decade and as someone who has held my hand more than once while I cried - both as a child and as an adult. His kindness, understanding and caring are the reasons he has such a large place in my heart. My condolences to his family and loved ones and my gratitude for sharing him with us.

Mr. Little made school fun and interesting. I remember him bringing in his record player to show us how the quality of sound is so much better than cassettes or CDs. He told the class to close our eyes and listen quietly to Pink Floyd's "Money" from start to finish and focus on the layers of sounds. I don't think I fully appreciated the experience at the time. Recently, while listening to records at my sister's (she and her husband are advocates of the vinyl revival) and I saw "the Dark Side of the Moon" on their shelf and asked to listen to "Money." I closed my eyes and listened silently. It was mind-blowing. I smiled picturing Mr. Little grooving in his Birkenstocks with his eyes closed at the front of the classroom. What a joyful man. I feel lucky to have known him.
He also challenged his students too. For example, he made us memorize and recite Robert Service's "The Cremation of Sam McGee." We all complained at the time but the exercise helped me internalize the rhythm and learn how to bring the dark story to life orally and in my imagination. Over 15 years later I still remember the opening stanza and other phrases. They rang in my ears giving me chills as I passed Lake Laberge when visiting the Yukon.
I didn't realize the value of such experiences in Mr. Little's class when I was twelve or thirteen but they have stuck with me and enriched my appreciation of music, poetry, and storytelling throughout my life. Thank you, Mr. Little, your joy persists.

I remember Dad or 'Si' (short for Simon) as I liked to call him saying to me if he could do it all over again he wouldn't change a thing. He would have been a school teacher. He loved helping kids to be the best they could be.
Reading the many obituaries of the impact that Dad had on his students, friends and family is very touching and goes beyond words could ever express. It makes me very proud to call Simon Little my Dad.
It is impossible to sum up my Dad in a few words……….. However if there was ever three words that stick out in my head that Dad lived by it was 'JUST DO IT.' Dad and I rocked those Nike shirts hard when I was a kid. He really went for it and made the most of his time with us.
There was never a dull moment growing up for his wife Kerry, Daughter Marlena, step son Markus and I (Seamus). Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, running, cycling, x-country skiing, downhill skiing, windsurfing, camping, basketball, golf, tennis, hockey. fishing. The list goes on and on. A jack of all trades and an amazing all around athlete. Passionate of the preservation and beauty of the outdoors. This is where Dad and our family found peace.
Dad was the best storyteller I know. He still has me convinced through his Leprechaun stories as a kid that Leprechauns might actually exist in Ireland. He found the magic in a day, and had the most wicked sense of Humour! He never took a music lesson in his life but man could that guy Whistle! His charm captured the hearts of us all.
Amanda Hooykaas could not have said it any better. "He died at 61. But he lived a hundred years in that time."
Dad is my hero. His legacy and bright spirit will continue to inspire all that had the pleasure of knowing him for generations to come.
Above all you were the best Dad a son could have ever asked for. You will be forever missed.
Find what you love and 'JUST DO IT!'
son, Seamus Little

I remember being a 'bright eyed and bushy tailed' new teacher going to my first day at Uptergrove Public School back in 1990. While driving on Hwy 12, I passed what looked like a 'b-movie' superhero riding a bike on the shoulder of the road. The guy was wearing 'Chitty! Chitty! Bang! Bang!' head gear and glasses, royal blue leotard tights and a bright orange pair of shorts. It's a bird! It's a plane! It's the greatest teacher that any kid would ever be lucky enough to have!
Simon was my mentor and friend. I learned so much about teaching and life from him during my formative years in the profession. The way he would interact with kids, sharing personal stories and life lessons. The way he would validate and encourage all of his students to shoot for lofty goals. He made everything about teaching look so easy, but on closer examination and many rides to school in his beloved 'Bullet', I quickly took note of his nightly regiment of grading and lesson preparation. He was a teacher of the highest order.
As a young teacher, I would often 'pitch' some of my extra-curricular program ideas to him. From 'The Fast Food League of Indoor Soccer' to 'Jelly Bean Jackpot' to 'Crazy Carpet 101', Simon's way of giving me his 'Gold Seal of Approval' always included laughter, a head shake and these words: "You are such an idiot!" What an honour!
Simon and I played basketball on Thursday nights, hockey on Friday nights. We hit the odd golf and tennis ball together. We even took a kayak trip up through Killarney and Georgian Bay in the mid-90's. Unfortunately, after an exchange overseas and a transfer to a new school, we lost touch. Sure we'd see each other at school related functions, but things were never the same. Life goes on.
My aunt Elinor always says, 'If you don't tell people, they won't know'. I never told Simon how much his impact has meant to me in my life. I can only hope that he knows.

It is hard to imagine a world without Simon Littlle. He was a man who touched so many lives - students and parents. His positive heathy outlook on life had a way of making all of us want to be a better person. His constant smile made us smile. His encouraging ways made us want to make the most of each and every day. He made Marchmont Public School the best place to be a student for my daughters Bailey and Becca Nicholls. His guidance and friendship helped them become who they are today. For us it was an honour to have Mr. Little in our lives. He was a gift and we will cherish all of our memories forever. Each day since Mr. Little's passing, I wake up, and I've been checking for new photos - new stories about this man that we all loved so much! My breath catches in my chest, as I feel what is beginning to be a familiar pain - knowing that he is gone, and the injustice of it all.
Mr. Little was my teacher at Uptergrove Public School in the good old days of his Silver Bullet, "Don't Worry Be Happy", and the controversial introduction of health class in the school! Oh, the fun days we all had!
I was fortunate enough to have my desk (as well as two friends' desks), pushed up against his desk, so at any given time, we were close, and he told everyone at our graduation that he would sit through joke after corny joke of mine on a daily basis. Being able to look up from my work, and have this safe man, this teacher and friend close by was a continual comfort.
Mr. Little always had a smile on his face. He's the only person I've ever seen whose eyes actually twinkled! He was the easiest teacher in the school to find - you just had to listen for the cheerful whistling that would often echo down the hallway.
Mr. Little was a man who truly cared about, and respected each of his students. He always had time for us, no matter if the issue was big or small, and he was only interested in our well-being. I have three little boys myself now, and I would have jumped at the chance to have Mr. Little teach them. His kind of teaching will never go out of style, but sadly, it's a rare thing to find. You see, Mr. Little taught us the curriculum, yes. But he taught us lifelong lessons, too. He taught us work ethic, by preparing us to meet the challenges of high school, and life. He taught us choices - never making the line fuzzy between good and bad choices, but never judgemental either. He taught us that we all mattered - that we were all significant and contributing members to society, no matter how much money we had, no matter how dysfunctional our background, and that nothing could hold us back in life, unless we let it.
Mr. Little looked at us, as I imagine he must have looked at his children: Markus, Marlena, and Seamus - with love. Yes, friends, you probably all knew and felt that! It's okay for a teacher to show love to their students - in fact, it's what so many of us needed! I wouldn't have had it any other way!
There was this one time, I don't remember what grade I was in, but I had not yet had Mr. Little for a teacher. However, having been at this small school for long enough, we had gotten to know each other to some degree already. It was the last day of school, and we were all in the hallway saying goodbye to people. I remember coming up to Mr. Little who had his back to me, and beaning him off the top of his head with a poster I had in my hand. He spun around and I had a big smile on my face and said "Bye Mr. Little!" and he grinned ear to ear, kissed me on the cheek like any father or uncle, and wished me a great summer!
I thrived on any attention he gave me, because even though I was fairly shy, he saw through it all, and drew out my confidence, leadership, and fun-loving side. I even adored the way he would tease me, and I will never forget the look on his face when he lovingly teased me for eating 5 pieces of pizza (I was one of the tiniest girls in the class). Yep! Those were great days!
Even in my parenting, I have remembered Mr. Little's words. He made lessons so fun, and memorable. During health classes, he would tell funny, clean stories to shake the awkwardness out of the situation, in order to teach us the important lesson of the day. Having three sons of my own now, when they ask "boy questions," I am reminded about some of those funny stories, and answer their questions accordingly.
There were so many special memories, especially of our private talks - five minute conversations here and there when he made it clear how special he thought I was. Looking back, I wonder if and how he had full insight to the daily challenges I faced, and the pain I carried around with me, because our conversations were soothing, healing, and exactly what I needed to hear. We had those conversations in class, and years later, (and much longer ones) on the phone.
Probably my most cherished memory of Mr. Little, was at our graduation ceremony. We had slides shown of every member of the class, while he would read a paragraph he'd written about each of us. Applause was held until the end. However, he said such wonderful things about me (maybe about 3/4 of the way through), that the gym erupted in a round of applause! No one had ever done that for me before, or probably since. Thank you Mr. Little, for seeing me the way I longed to be seen, and giving others your eyes for those few moments! Even though I would have never guessed it, on the last day of grade 8, I was the first to cry.
Yes, he is so missed, and loved! When I feel that ache in my heart thinking about him, I have come to associate it with what he would say to me, if he was here...I think of him whistling, and singing "Don't Worry Be Happy" and I've introduced my boys to that song, and told them why it is such a great way to think.
I love Mr. Little very much, and I can only imagine how wonderful it would have been to be one of his family members! My heart goes out to them all, and I want them to know that life can be difficult, cruel, and sometimes too short, but to never lose hope or faith, because it can also be beautiful, and even miraculous! Mr. Little brought beauty into my life, and the effect he had on his students, is nothing short, of miraculous! The day WILL come, when our God will take such pleasure in restoring Mr. Little's life, to perfect health, perfect happiness, in a perfect paradise, just as He originally planned! I know He longs for that day, as I do! I thank God for Mr. Little's presence in my life, and anticipate that day, with tears of joy! Please keep us posted as to when the celebration of his life will be!
Much love,
Veronica Emberson-Foxcroft (known in grade 8, as Roni Darbyshire)

Simon Little was a wonderful soul. He radiated love, warmth, caring and was actually a teacher who really loved teaching. He encouraged all his students in many ways. A man who talked the talk and walked the walk. It was always amazing to see him bike by our house and he would yell out at us or you'd see him trekking through Bass Lake Provincial Park and he'd always take the time out for a few words. You could call him any time of day or night regarding your children and school. I will always remember the day of my daughter's grade 8 graduation. We took this picture with him and he told me to get in the picture as well. We will always treasure the photo and the memories we hold of him. It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of my favourite teacher Mr. Simon Little. I was fortunate enough to have him twice at Uptergrove and he was such an influential man. It was almost like having a parent at school - whether you did something good or bad he cared about his students so much. What he thought about me mattered to me.
There are so many stories he used to tell and so many stories to tell that I remember of him.
I remember his love of his Silver Bullet (and some boys that pulled some spark plug wires as a joke). His daily commute from in town to Uptergrove on his bicycle along with our bike trips he took us on to McRae Provincial Park. I was proud to receive an English award from him - which I still have to this day.
As an adult I ran into him a few times and it is amazing with all of the students he taught he managed to pick me out of a crowd to say hello.
RIP Mr. Little - you were taken from this world way too early. Maybe someday we'll catch up on the flipside.

Mr. Little taught me when I was in grade 7. He was the most engaging teacher and always had the coolest lessons. One thing that has always stuck with me though, is an assignment we had to write about our future career. His comments on mine were to aim higher and not settle for less because he knew I was smart and strong enough to achieve my goals. When I think of Simon, I will focus on his dedication to his students & learning, his love of nature, his commitment to exercise and his super healthy muffins that Marlena and I hated. Most importantly - I will remember his love towards his amazing children and his family. I hope wherever he is, he is sitting on a beach, kayaking on a lake or enjoying some of his home brew he used to make. Sending much love to his family during this difficult time. Xo Kimmie

Mr. Little was more than a teacher; he was a friend. One of the reasons I am who I am is because of this him. One of the reasons I became a teacher is to follow in his foot steps and become a role model to students. Mr. Little will be forever missed. You have truly touched the lives of so many students. May you Rest in Peace.

I've typed and deleted a few stories now, not able to find the right words. The truth is, I meant to send Mr. Little a letter a couple of years ago to tell him of the immense impact he has had on my life, over 10 years after he taught me grade 7. Those words seem a little too personal now, so maybe I'll just give a list of lessons that I learned from this amazing man, and what I've done with them since.
Mr. Little's Lesson Plan for Life
1. Your Bike is a reliable method of transportation -->
I've been on several bike tours, and also raced in many competitions. My largest tour was a 3000+ ride across Western Canada with a charitable organization that taught local communities about environmental and social justice: two topics that Mr. Little introduced me to.
2. Running is good for the heart and soul -->
Even if you're not any good, just run. Mr. Little helped me to love running and now I;m officially a marathoner. Mr. Little helped to make fitness a regular part of my life and is a big reason why I am currently completing my Master's degree in Physiotherapy.
3. Love nature and everything it gives you -->
I love camping and exploring the world around me. Mr. Little helped me to fall in love with nature and to respect it. I even completed a bachelor's degree in environmental sustainability.
5. You are important. -->
Every one of Mr. Little's students was special and respected by him. He taught me to be open and non judgemental about my peers, and folks from other walks of life. This continues to help my today in the relationships I have with my patients.
4. Be a leader, you never know the influence you can have on an individual.-->
Mr. Little inspired me to be involved in several leadership roles. In particular, I became an outdoor educator for grade 8 kids, and taught core science curriculum in the wilderness. I would like to think that I have inspired at least one kid half as much as Mr. Little continues to inspire me.
Thanks for everything Mr. Little. I hope that I have made you proud.

I had the pleasure of being a student of Mr Little's twice, mind you this was a very long time ago about 13 years ago. I have grown up telling stories about this teacher. He was so positive and helpful in every aspect! Not just with school, but with our personal lives as well. I have never met a student who has not loved Mr Little. He was loved by so many and this is such a sad time for many of us! He was such a great role model and he has impacted my life so much. When he spoke, everyone was just silent to see which crazy way he planned for us to learn that day. He truly truly was an amazing man and I will always be greatfull for the times I spent in his class room!
I love you Mr Little, and thank you for everything!

One of the most influential people I've had in my life. He taught me, when life was moving a little too fast, to slow down. Take a deep breath and look around me. Take it all in, and for that moment, enjoy. I have such a deep appreciation for nature, because of him. Mr. Little, you will be thought of often, and always remembered with a smile. Thanks for the memories!!!

He was one of my favourite teachers. I remember at one point we came close to a parent-supported (at least my parents supported it) homework strike in our class, from the amount of homework he gave. We all backed down, and I don't believe for one moment it was out of fear of Mr. Little's wrath, but of his disappointment.

Skittle helped me become who I am. Back in school I use to be shy, I never reall stood up for myself and I was the farthest things from outgoing. For the people who know me now, that's so incredibly hard to believe. Being in skittles grade seven class helped me break through that barrier I had. I am now the most outgoing, happy and carefree person out there. IF There is a chane to do something that will embarrass me, I'm probably the first person in line to do it. Little nicknamed me pita. It stands for pain in the ash ... he shared this with my parents, and in the same sentence he asked if he could adopt me. He touched me and I will forever carry him in my heart . Rest in your wooded paradise skittle, you'll love on down here for generations to come

My heart aches over the news of Mr. Little's death! How can this man, always filled with such warmth and sunshine – such life, and love, be gone so soon? He was an inspiration to us all, and was one of those teachers that made all of us feel like we not only mattered, but that we were loved! He will be missed so very much, and I will always be grateful for those twinkling eyes, that amazing sense of humour, and his lovely, devoted personality, that made him worthy to be called what we would sometimes slip and say -- “Mom.”

So many occasions to remember - Up North sitting with him at the campfire, and his infectious laugh which was everywhere he was, and he said that in the grand scheme of things, he so much wanted to be a good parent to Seamus and Marlena - he said who could ask for more than that - and he did more than that - in his career, his marriage, and his always accessible and caring friendship to us - we will miss him forever at this house, and going up to visit the family without seeing Simon at least once is almost inconceivable - RIP to one of the world's great ones - Condolences to all of us - Love, Janet

Mr and Mrs. Little were friends of my mother, Diane Lewis/Granger when I was a kid. I remember them coming to our house, (sometimes by canoe!) and sharing in the joy of the outdoors, and the joy of teaching, and the joy of children. I remember holding Seamus in my arms when he was just a wee thing. Such a wonderful family. Such sadness to hear of Simon's passing. Prayers from our family to yours.

Mr. Little was an inspirational teacher and a wonderful role model. He taught his students, myself included, the value of hard work and goal setting, an appreciation for nature, a respect for others, a passion for sport - and of course to really take advantage of a good snow day. Mr. Little had a unique way of making any day better, as he always had a smile on his face and unwavering sense of optimism. It is because of teachers like Mr. Little that I became a teacher. I hope the lessons he taught me are carried forward through my own teaching practice. He was an incredible mentor to have and I feel lucky to have been taught by him. My deepest sympathies go to his family.

Sometimes in life your children are blessed to have been influenced by a teacher who encompasses everything you could possibly hope for and then some. It is with tears of sadness that I have heard of the passing of Mr Little. A man who knew every student in the school regardless of their age or whether he taught them or not. He was an inspiration to every sporting team, particularly, his cross country running kids ! Mr Little certainly touched the lives of Kendell and Sadie, but many, many more prior to them. In fact, the girls Uncle Pete had him as a teacher as a youngster ! It is an honor to be able to say you touched my life and I know that many of the teacher's along side you at Marchmont were guided by a great leader, who just stood in the back and did what he did best - teach !!!

I got to know Simon through the school and grew to care a great deal for him. When he took ill, it seemed so unfair that a man as caring and giving as Simon should have to suffer. I am so sad to hear of the passing of Simon. I taught with Simon for ten years at Marchmont Public School. Some teachers go the extra mile and make a difference in kids lives. Simon did this in so many ways. His energy was infectious, and all of the students loved to be in his class and listen to all of his stories. He was a wealth of knowledge, and somebody who genuinely cared for his students. I still consider Simon to be the most effective teacher I have ever taught with. He was a devoted and passionate coach who cared deeply about his teams. Simon led by example with a healthy lifestyle. He regularly biked out to work, and around the province. Most of all, Simon will be remembered for a great sense of humour. He regularly had the staff in stiches. Our deepest condolences to his family.

I am so sorry to hear the news of Mr. Little passing. He was a wonderful man not just as a teacher but a father. I was lucky to have him twice as a teacher. He talked about his kids lots and his family. He taught us school but also the way of life. He loved the out doors. I remember him biking to school and when days were not so good to bike he would drive is old car. Which he loved. He was there supporting me in many ways. He helped with my self esteem and encouraged me to follow my dreams. He was funny and made school fun. He made sure that all students felt a part of everything.many times he stayed late or came in early to help me on a subject I was having problems with or he supported me as a father figure. He would let me vent and he just knew what to say or do to make me feel better. He challenged me to move forward. I thank him for all the love and support throughout my public school years and beyond. I kept in touch with him up until about 5 years ago. I loved his smile and his laugh. He will be missed by many. Rest in piece no more pain. Loving memories sent to heaven by Apey (which you would call me like many friends from public school years) <3 your loved always remembered never forgotten. Xo

He cared about his students and his fellow colleagues. He always had a smile on his face and had a wonderful way of making people laugh. I just wanted you and your family to know that Mr. Little was the best teacher I think I ever had. He was always fun and full of energy. He would play every sport going with us all and no one ever was left out. There were lots of hockey games that he was right in the middle of when we were playing in the school yard. When your young and learning you want a teacher that gets involved and that was Mr. Little. We learned our required courses but I think we learned more about life when he was there. I remember him telling us all about biking across Canada and the sights he saw. He taught us about life not just school work. I know you don't need me to tell you he was awesome but he was for sure. My deepest sympathies Marlene and Seamus. I have very fond memories of Simon, family outings, camping trips and the like. Some of the best moments always came about in the kitchen when we arrived, where Simon would take five minutes and give them just to me. Sometimes he would ask if there was something new and other times his attention would come in the form of a story. Last time i saw Simon was round about 15 years ago (when i still loved in Canada), but had not seem him for 5-6 years. He was out running with a group on the couch trail. When he saw me he stopped up and gave me another good 5 minutes that included a hug. I know he could be difficult at times, but he was a good man. Sincerely Brendan
