Happy Thanksgiving Mom! We miss you terribly and love you deeply, but this time is not about us, so enjoy your dance. On Death - Kahlil Gibran wrote You would know the secret of death. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. On this our first Thanksgiving without our Mother, the head of our family, and Grandmother to those young women who she loved so dearly, Faith, Rachel and Julia - you young ladies need to consider why you feel the loss of your Grandma so deeply “When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.” (KG), so each of you celebrate and honour Ruby Penman by Cowgirling yourself up, dusting yourself off, grip the reins firmly and follow the example that Grandma set for you. You all have the capacity, so make Grandma proud! Have a Happy Thanksgiving 2014 and speak of nothing small around tonight's dinner table where Grandma will be close by your side.

Our Mom and Grandma was truly one of a kind. Her family was her life, and her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Generous to a fault, she never hesitated to drop everything to care for and nurture those she loved. Her passing leaves a huge hole in our lives, which we will fill with some amazing memories. We remember her rushing to Bracebridge when Rigel (her first grandchild) was born; and the huge smile on her face. A few years later we proudly watched her accept her Honours Bachelor degree from Western U; showing the world how very determined and intelligent she was. We enjoyed many crazy road trips through Montana, California and Arizona with her, Ruby was always up for a new adventure. She loved coming out to our ranch in Alberta, spending quiet time with the dogs and horses. We had long conversations around the fireplace, and she was always armed with several books, thus helping to instill her love of reading and learning into Rigel. Our fondest memories are of Mom joining us for horse-packing trips in the Rockies. Even though she was over 70, she didn't hesitate to sleep under the stars, get on a horse and ride the trails with us. Sadly she took that last big ride the other day, and as hard as it is to get back in the saddle; we will carry on the way she would expect us to.
