John and I are truly blessed to have had Karen grace and enrich our lives. She was one of those rare souls who treated everyone with compassion, kindness and encouragement. Karen had such a wonderful sense of humor and had a natural way of making you feel like you had been the best of friends forever. She had this incredible ability to see beauty in everything. We will miss her dearly. Our deepest condolences to Jim, Lisa, Nicholas, Teddy and her family.

Karen Your life is a shining light to all of us. God went before you and was there in your battle preparing you. The peace and comfort you received from your loving Father is also our peace and comfort. We share the same Holy Spirit which connects us to you even though you are now with Jesus and your earthly dad. For us who are left behind, we have the hope and assurance that we will meet again, Karen, but we will miss you so very much. Until we meet again!!!

Karen generously shared her soul and her passion through her art and her person. The following describes my experience as I worked on a book with Karen - the education that I received on many levels as she shared her love through the medium of stone:
What does it take to coax polished beauty out of a rough block of rock?
Anyone who has watched sculptor, Karen Brodie, work will know that some of that coaxing may involve the use of heavy machinery and lots of protective gear, followed by tenacious fine tuning and polishing the piece to a mirror.
Above all it involves seeing the potential hidden within the raw material before machine or chisel meet stone, indeed before the block is even purchased.
To fully understand the love, the frustrations, the insights, the joy and the pain that each piece represents, one would have to step into the artist's mind as passion merges with cold stone.
Still, we are not excluded. The essence is there. It touches us and begs us to touch it, to caress its delicate contours with our eyes. It calls to us to reach inside ourselves and find the profound gift released by the artist.
(The Afterword from Karen Brodie's book, "The Images Within".)

Dear Jim and family of Karen, I know so well how words can not comfort you when you lose someone so dear. I remember how hollow words can be, empty phrases, spoken by well-meaning people, how the purpose of those words is often mourning therapy for the ones that are saying those words. But I also know that Karen deserves more than just a few words on facebook chat. I never met her in person, but over the last few years I really enjoyed being her facebookfriend, enjoyed her beautiful art work, her humour, interest and friendship. (Looking at her art work on internet makes me glad she’s leaving behind such a wonderful legacy, she’ll live on in the hearts of everybody that enjoys it’s beauty. I know it’s a cliché, but very true) And not to forget the regular news-flash about the fantastic Ted E. A word from Karen always brightened up my day… We always made “plans” to visit each other in real life. Probably that would never have happened, but the fact that it isn’t possible anymore, makes me very sad. I know she was fighting hard against that horrible disease I know so well (luckily not personally – yet), she had so much courage, and I really admired her for that. I will always remember her, specially when I’ll be in France on our yearly holiday destination, Karen always used to joke about how I only function in sunny weather…I’ll miss our little chats. I can imagine all too well how heartbroken you all must be, despite the beautiful memories and the fact she meant so much for many people, all that doesn’t make the pain go away. It will stay with you forever, but it will, one day, be manageable. Karen can’t visit us anymore, but if any of you ever visit Belgium, you are more than welcome to stay with us. All my love and a big hug from Karen’s Belgian friend

Dear Jim and family, Our hearts and thoughts are with you and with Karen. Karen was a gift to all of us. She was a shining light, filled with passion, creativity, love and strength. She had a positive impact on everyone she met. I will always feel her warm embrace and see her gentle smile. She has left a lasting legacy and we will remember her forever. In her too short time, she created art that will last an eternity. She created life from stone and gave life to everyone around her. We are honoured to have known her. Jim, you loved and supported Karen in every way and allowed her to become the wonderful woman she was meant to be. Karen will always be with us. Love Evelyn and David
