My Dad is present in most of the best memories of my life. One of my earliest, most exciting memories is set on David Street in Sudbury Ontario. I am on a perfectly fit, bright yellow bicycle. "Yellow Bird" it says on the bar. Dad has been helping me practice for about a month and he asks me if i'm ready to take off the training wheels. "I don't think so Daddy" is the response. He says he thinks I am. "Nope" i argue. " How about if I hold the back of the seat and you try going up the street to see if you can do it? I am very stubborn for a 5 year old but eventually he sways me to a short trial with the promise that they can go back on if i'm not comfortable. The trainers come off and a few passes are made up and down the driveway without notable incident. Dad is firmly holding onto the seat and keeping Yellow Bird on the correct flightpath.
Soon, i am persuaded, with some hesitation, to try the same assisted maneuver but to test Yellow Bird's wings on the edge of David street. To me, David street is a really long street with a really big hill at the top. "Ok," i agree, "but just to the bottom of the hill. We make a go of it, first slowly and very steadily, i can sense Dad's hand gripping the seat, impeding any tipping or sideways momentum. I feel confidence rising and pick up speed, so does Dad, he's panting a bit, feeling those Vantage kingsized. "Wow" i am thinking, feeling the breeze lift the hair on my forehead, "this is pretty decent. I can just ride like this from now on, with Daddy running beside me. This is totally working for me!" We are approaching the hill- it looks like a mountain to me but it's probably more a molehill, actually. dad is really panting hard now. "Keep going! Pedal hard! Pedal hard!Pedal hard!" he's yelling, my eyes are watering and there's a noticeable wheeze behind my left shoulder. I do pedal hard. I sense the incline of the hill and pump it, I feel a surge of energy pushing the seat, i focus and ascend that mountain - Lift off!
when i get to the top my momentum relaxes and i turn with excitement to Dad. He's not there. He's at the bottom of the hill breathing hard and smiling his full teeth smile. I am appalled.
"Daddy! You let go! " I am mad and i cry - i did that alot. He just keeps smiling and laughing as he walks up the hill.
"You did it Kerry-Jane! You made it! Good for you! Way to go pal! Way to go Yellow Bird!" he gives my bike a pat and gives me a congratulatory shoulder squeeze and a little shake." I am still wailing at this momentous betrayal. "i don't wanna ride my bike anymore - i want my training wheels!" "Ohhhhhrrrrrrr" he growls good naturedly "you did it Kerry-Jane, you don't need them anymore." He's not panting as much now. "Now comes the best part" he says "you get to go down the hill!"
"Hmmmmm" i ease up on the sniffling a bit" what are the implications of thiis? I hadn't considered going back down. I have absolutely no idea what this could entail. I turn Yellow Bird around and check out the trajectory down David street. My dad and I discuss a stategy for wheel placement and braking if required. I consider my options, he encourages and convinces, cajoles and finally coerces with popsicles upon our return home.
I mount Yellow Bird. Dad holds her steady at the top of the hill. " Ok pedal!" he yells and pushes me off. Yellow Bird swoops down the hill. All my hair is swooshed back from my head. The tassels on my handlebars are flapping wildly. I'm going really, really fast - i know i'm reallly flying now - i'm freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Why did i wait so long???" I remember thinking that. Why did i wait.
I cruise all the way down David street and turn around, amazed, to look back at my Dad.He's waving and walking down the hill. He might actually be smoking - the '70's - mad days! He strolls jauntily towards me with his jaunty summers evening stride and i wait in front of the driveway, sparkling with adrenelin. "Put 'er there pal!" he growls and offers his hand. Big, warm with a cat's eye ring. "I liked it Daddy!" i announce. We roll down the driveway, past the discarded training wheels. "Good for you dear, good for you...." he says as i position my kickstand and park Yellow Bird with a new authority. Dusk is settling. We head up the cement steps for popsicles.
David street is mine that hill is mine,Yellow Bird is mine, my Dad is mine. Life is growing - i't's gonna be good, i can tell already.

Dear Judy & McKeown family, I want to send our deepest sympathies and condolences on the passing of Ken. It was shocking to hear of his passing after seeing him most recently at Judy's and Chris'mother's funeral just a few short weeks ago. Ken spoke so eloquently about his mother-in-law and entertained us with some of his humour. I know how close the Corosky's were to Ken and the huge feeling of loss everyone is feeling. He always was so pleasant with everyone and really loved his family being around him. I hope all of you can feel better in the days ahead remembering fond memories of Ken.

Judy and family I was shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of Ken - I am sure this is a very difficult and sad time for you all. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to visit with you in Gravenhurst for Auntie Jean's memorial - although not the happiest of occasions, we did get to visit and I had the opportunity to experience first hand the vivacity and humour with which Ken approached life as evidenced by the tribute he provided for Auntie Jean. My htoughts and prayers are with you all. Colleen Dunning (Toronto)

Judy, Andria, Greg, Kerry, and all the McKeown's, Posgate's & Lewis's. My sincere and deepest heartfelt condolences to the loss of Ken, he will be missed, always remembered and always in our hearts. Ever since I first met Ken and Judy at the McKeown cottage, You have always welcomed me with open arms. Kend I had great chats about life, baseball and golf at the cottage and in Florida. I also really enjoyed hacking a few golf balls out to the island at the cottage with Ken and others. He was a wonderful man...Sending my prayers and love to you all...Below is a poem that reminded me of Ken... How little we knew that morning, God was to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. Gone from our homes your smiling face, Your cheerful pleasant ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone happy days. Your life was one of kindly deeds, A helping hand always for others needs, Sincere and true in heart and mind, Beautiful memories left behind. Days have passed, our hearts still sore, As time rolls on we'll miss you so, Your pleasant smile, your heart of gold, No finer person this world could hold.

One of our fondest memories is learning how to play Trivial Pursuit with The McKeowns. Ken and Judy were babysitting our kids, Stephanie and Tim. We arrived to pick them up and were promptly introduced to this brand new Canadian game. Several hours and no doubt, beers later….we were still playing the game, huddled over the coffee table in their living room in Scarborough.
We also recall watching the McKeown kids grow up, as Jerry taught, coached and directed both Andria and Kerry during their public school days. Happy Memories for sure!
