Elizabeth Campey

Obituary of Elizabeth Campey

Campey, Elizabeth Jeanne "Betty" Betty passed away peacefully on November 25, five days after a serious fall. Betty was born on June 9, 1924, daughter of Max Hazel and Alice (Meier) Hazel. She grew up in the north London suburb of Acton, with her sisters Molly and Marjorie, and her brother Deryck, who all predeceased her. Evacuated from London during World War II, she returned to work in a bank, where the Manager introduced her to her future husband, Geoff Campey, with the words "Betty, this is Geoff Campey. He will be taking over your job." (Geoff was one of the servicemen who returned to workplaces after the war). Despite this somewhat rocky introduction, they fell in love and were married for 64 years. In 1950 they moved to Toronto, and then to Gormley, where her love of music - particularly the piano - made her a valued contributor to her church and community. Betty and Geoff returned to England in 1985, and spent twelve very special years in rural Devon, where Betty's love of music again made her a valued member of the local community. They returned to Canada in 1998, and spent the last 16 years as active members of the Big Cedar Estates retirement community. Betty is survived by her husband Geoffrey, sons John (partner Jefferson Guzman) and Stephen (partner John Nagy). Betty's family also appreciate the support and friendship that her caregiver, best fried, accomplice, and "daughter", Tracey Park has provided over the past number of years. Details regarding a memorial service will be forthcoming.
